Allergies

By Dr. Nektarios Logaras – Dermatologist/Venereologist
The word Allergy is Greek and comes from the expression ‘Other Reaction’ and characterizes the body’s response to a pathogenic or non-pathogenic agent.
ΑThere are 4 types of allergic reaction according to Coombs and Gell. The three types involve an allergic reaction through the antibodies circulating in the blood. In the fourth type, which is the immediate cellular reaction, the allergic reaction is caused by lymphocytes.
Allergies are common and can be created by various causes such as the sun, chemical elements, metal e.g. nickel, foods, medicines, plants, dust, insect bites (mosquitoes, sphinxes, bees) or some marine organisms e.g. some seaweeds or jellyfishes. A common mechanism of action in allergic reactions is the release of histamine in the body.
Some types of allergies can be inherited.
Symptoms
The symptoms are intense itching, burning sensation, pain and swelling. In angioedema, there is the possibility of the breathing’s cessation with the obstruction of the airways.
ALLERGIC URTICARIA (HIVES)
The acute and chronic urticaria respectively, can be caused by water, exercise, sun, stress, some medicine e.g. antipyretics or antibiotics, foods e.g. milk, eggs, nuts, seafoods. Dermographism (or dermatographia) is a clinical feature of allergic urticaria. Allergic urticaria can also be caused by some health problemse.g. mental illnesses, surgeries etc.

The most common combinations of drugs are analgesics, antihistamines, corticosteroids, and epinephrine in cases of allergic shock, for cardiovascular rejuvenatio
In some cases, antibiotics are also needed to fight co-existing or community-acquired infections.
Patients with a history of severe allergic reaction or anaphylactic shock are advised to always have a pre-filled adrenaline injection with them.
The determination of the causative agent is especially important to avoid a new episode of allergy.
It is also recommended to avoid psychological and physical tension.
Diets from histamine-releasing foods such as seafoods, pork, nuts, eggs, certain fruits such as kiwis and strawberries as well as medicines such as anti-inflammatory drugs are recommended as a precautionary measures after an allergic urticaria episode for a certain period of time.
