BALANITIS / BALANOPOSTHITIS

By Dr. Nektarios Logaras – Dermatologist/Venereologist

What is Balanitis?

Balanitis is called the inflammation of the glans penis. Balanoposthitis is an inflammation that affects both the glans penis and the foreskin.
The condition can occur at any age and is very common.

Summer is a period that occurs more often due to the higher temperature.
Factors that favor its development are phimosis (tight, non-retractable foreskin), short frenulum as well as coexisting diseases such as:

-Diabetes mellitus
-Autoimmune Diseases and
-Patients who receiving immunosuppressive therapy

Symptoms

The skin of the penis in the area of the glans is red, inflamed, with itching, stinging and may coexist with serous purulent fluid secretion. It may also have cracks, small sores, red or white patches on the head of the penis and may coexist oedema (swelling).

What are the causes of Balanitis?

The poor hygiene or the excessive cleaning of the area with the wrong products.

Genital yeast infection (candidiasis).

However, the examination and treatment in each case should be done by a Specialized Dermatologist-Venereologist because the same symptoms may have been caused by different skin diseases.

The most common skin diseases that may cause Balanitis are the following:

-Contact dermatitis
-Irritant / Allergic reaction
-Lichen sclerosus
-Psoriasis
-Bacterial infection
-Zoon balanitis
-Adhesions

Treatment

The treatment involves the detection of the causative agents and their removal.

Also, oral treatment, topical ointments, cleansers and instructions for the proper care of the area.

What can I do to protect myself:
-Use a condom each and every time you have sex with a new sexual partner in order to avoid the Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).
-Wash with lukewarm water, day after day or daily, in order to remove sebum with soap with neutral pH for men and then dry gently.
-Wash the hands before and after contact, so as not to carry germs, fungi, allergens, chemical irritants, etc.
-In the case of balanitis, it should be used condoms and lubricants for sensitive skin.
