SKIN TAGS (MOLES)

Before & After

By Dr. Nektarios Logaras – Dermatologist/Venereologist

What are Skin Tags?

The Skin Tags (Moles) are benign, skin growths. They are usually skin-colored or darker and sometimes they are pink. They are connected to the skin by a small, thin stalk and grow slowly. They are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which belongs to the same family with the viruses that cause genital warts and warts, with the difference of the location, the fact that they have no subtypes, and that the skintags are not as contagious as genital warts and other skin warts.

Genital warts appear in the genital, perianal, oral and pharyngeal areas, and are divided into subtypes. The warts appear mainly on the hands, feet, soles and face (cheeks) and are distinguished in subtypes. While, the skin tags are located mainly in areas where there is intense friction and minor injury and have no subtypes. Skin tags differ morphologically, in those that have a stalk, i.e. hanging from a thin skin tissue and the large ones, over half a centimeter, that are called acrochordons.

All the factors gradually alter the original skin structure. They cause wear and reduce the production of Hyaluronic Acid, Collagen and Elastin.

They may appear on the:

-Eyelids
-Neck, in the case of papilloma colli
-Armpits
-Upper chest
-Under the breasts
-Thighs, groin, buttocks and more rarely in the back

What factors make them worsen

Unlike genital warts and warts, which are considered highly contagious, skin tags (papillomas) have a slower growth rate and are more contagious. Skin tags can easily expand and grow in size in the same person, while more difficult in his/her partner.

In areas of the skin where there is intense friction, and minor injuries, such as the neck, especially if there is some jewelry (necklace – chain) and in the folds of the skin where there is friction between them and the clothes.

Obesity promotes the growth and spread of skin tags (papillomas) due to increased skin friction. They may also develop at a much faster rate during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.

Another factor that is involved in the appearance of skin tags (papillomas) is heredity.

THE TREATMENT IN ATHENS SOUTH DERMATOLY CLINIC

In the Athens South Dermatology Clinic

In the Athens South Dermatology Clinic, the diagnosis and treatment of skin tags (papillomas) is always performed only by the specialized Dermatologist and Venereologist Dr. Nektarios Logaras.

With the help of high-definition digital imaging (FotoFinder) and the many years of experience, specialization, and individualization of each patient, the skin tags (papillomas) are treated easily, quickly, painless and bloodless, only in one session (depending on their number) without leaving scars and cessation of daily activities. They removed completely via laser CO2 evaporation of the infected tissue without affecting the healthy skin. The Perfect Treatment with CO2 Laser

With the innovative technology of CO2 Laser with the method of selective photothermolysis, the skin tags are evaporated with absolute control and safety, without surgical removal with a scalpel as well as without the use of sutures and biopsy.

What we must look out when we have skin tags

Skin Tags (papillomas) are asymptomatic and do not cause itching or pain. But they limit and make the everyday life difficult because if we wear a jewelry or even use a towel or sponge or intense rubbing with some clothes they can get injured and bleed, and may cause inflammation and swelling. That is why we must not shave with razor the area with skin tags (papillomas).

Except from an aesthetic problem, it is also functional for the above reasons and if it bleeds, it is good to visit the Dermatologist.

Finally, it is good to keep our body weight low because, as we mentioned above, obesity favors their growth and spread.

The most effective way to treat them briefly and definitively is to treat them with CO2 Laser when they appear.
