Onychocryptosis or Ingrown Toe Nail

By Dr. Nektarios Logaras – Dermatologist / Venereologist

Onychocryptosis occurs when the tip of the nail grows down and into the skin, on the big toe.

The ingrown is accompanied by acute pain, redness and edema (swelling) due to inflammation and granuloma may still develop around the nail.

The causes are the following:

-Cutting the nails too short
-Wearing very tight shoes
-Beatings and injuries
-Curved nails
-Hereditary Predisposition
-Obesity
-Hyperhidrosis
-Various diseases of the nails (increased curvature of the nails (gampsonychia), bacterial or fungal infections, onychogryposis (Ram’s Horn Nails), nails thickening, etc).

The nail ingrown depends on the inflammation, the pain, the swelling and the severe limitation of the daily activities and is classified in the following stages.

1st stage
When there is some pain, inflammation, and swelling with or without fluid leakage.

2nd stage
When there is pain, inflammation with swelling, fluid leakage, possible granuloma and sufficient restriction of daily fuction.

3rd stage
In the third stage, the nail ingrown into the skin has become chronically inflamed, there is an outflow of liquid with pus, severe pain, and it is almost impossible for the patient to wear a shoe and walk comfortably.

Onychocryptosis is a common phenomenon in adolescents.

TREATMENT

Dr. Nektarios Logaras personalizes the treatment depending on the stage.

Initially, he will give home instructions and maybe antibiotics.

When the problem is severe, the doctor will apply the laser treatment which is painless with the use of local anesthesia and without bleeding and sutures in the doctor’s office as well as with immediate return to daily activities.

The confrontation and the treatment of the nail are final.

The Laser accelerates the healing process and eliminates the formation of scars, due to the evaporation of the granuloma, and the hemostasis leaving a dry wound with short permanent healing.
