KELOIDS (KELOID SCARS)

By Dr. Nektarios Logaras – Dermatologist/Venereologist

Keloids are dermal fibrotic lesions around the area of an injury due to an overreaction of the skin healing process. A keloid typically begins as a pink, red, or flesh-colored scar that darkens over time and ends up having the same color as the skin around the scar. This swollen tissue (keloid) usually appears after a surgical incision, cut, burn, acne on the sternum, or after the ears piercing.

Keloid scars are more common on the upper chest, shoulders, head (especially the earlobes after a piercing), neck and rarely on the face. They may cause pain, itch, or tenderness. While a keloid is growing, it can feel itchy, painful, or both. Keloids on the chest are often tender. Keloids can be as small as a pinhead or as orange. Injury is the common predisposing factor causing keloids only in predisposed individuals.

In the Athens South Dermatology Clinic, the diagnosis of keloids is always performed by the expert dermatologist Dr. Nektarios Logaras with the help of the advanced technology of Digital Dermatoscope the Fotofinder ATBM System.

Then, he treats them with the innovative Lasers that are available in our clinic, the appropriate for each case since each lesion may require different treatment. In any case, the result is impressive since the lesions are treated with a near-zero relapse rate, painless with the use of local anesthesia and with an excellent aesthetic result.
